Payton served as the head coach of the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League from 2006 to 2021, leading the franchise to its first Super Bowl victory during the 2009 season.
Payton started his coaching career in 1988 as an offensive assistant at San Diego State University. While working at San Diego State, he also coached Marshall Faulk from 1992 to 1993.
