According to NFL Research, there have only been three instances where quarterbacks were selected with each of the first three picks of a draft. However, there has never been a year where four straight quarterbacks were taken to kick off the event.
NFL Media draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah is predicting a record-breaking scenario for the 2024 draft, with four quarterbacks expected to go in the first four picks. His predictions include USC’s Caleb Williams to the Chicago Bears at No. 1, UNC’s Drake Maye to the Washington Commanders at No. 2, LSU’s Jayden Daniels to the New England Patriots at No. 3, and Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy to the Minnesota Vikings through a trade at No. 4.
If this sequence comes to fruition, it would set a new precedent in the draft history for quarterbacks and mark the first time since 2021 that the top three picks were all quarterbacks.
Looking back at history, the outcomes of previous drafts where quarterbacks dominated the early picks have varied. In the 2021 draft, Trevor Lawrence found success with the Jacksonville Jaguars, while Zach Wilson has faced challenges with the New York Jets. The 1999 and 1971 drafts also saw multiple quarterbacks selected in the first few picks, each resulting in different career paths for the players.
As anticipation builds for the 2024 draft, NFL.com analysts are unanimous in predicting Caleb Williams as the top overall selection to the Chicago Bears. Beyond that, there is speculation on where Maye and Daniels might land in the draft order.
