Kansas City Chiefs fans can breathe a sigh of relief as running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire has agreed to a one-year deal to stay with the team for the upcoming season.
The news was reported by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport on Tuesday.
The two-time Super Bowl-winning running back was a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft but has faced challenges in living up to the high expectations set during his rookie year.
Despite injuries and competition from Isiah Pacheco, Edwards-Helaire will continue to be a key part of the Chiefs’ backfield. The signing of Edwards-Helaire could also signal the end of any potential plans to add former Baltimore Ravens back J.K. Dobbins to the team.
In his rookie season, Edwards-Helaire rushed for 803 yards but has struggled to replicate that production due to various factors.
Over his four seasons with the Chiefs, he has accumulated 2,610 scrimmage yards and 19 total touchdowns. Last season, he played a career-high 15 games but had a decrease in rushing yards compared to previous seasons.
Despite not having his fifth-year option picked up by the Chiefs, Edwards-Helaire is set to return for his fifth season with the team. Fans will be eager to see how he performs and contributes to the Chiefs’ offense in the upcoming year.
