The Detroit Lions are gearing up for the upcoming NFL draft with a different perspective this year. After a successful season that saw them clinch a division crown and make a deep run in the playoffs, the Lions find themselves picking at the end of the first round, a departure from their usual top 10 selection.
Currently holding the No. 29 overall pick, the Lions have not been in this position since 2015. In recent years, the team has been strategic in their draft approach, targeting players who can make an immediate impact on the field. Last season, they traded back from the No. 6 spot to No. 12, selecting running back Jahmyr Gibbs and linebacker Jack Campbell.
Despite their lower draft position this year, head coach Dan Campbell emphasized that their strategy remains the same – to draft the best player available. The team’s focus is on building a strong roster and filling in any remaining gaps in the lineup.
Throughout the offseason, the Lions have made moves to strengthen their team with additions like Carlton Davis, Amik Robertson, D.J. Reader, Marcus Davenport, and Kevin Zeitler. However, there are still areas that need attention, such as cornerback, edge rusher, offensive line depth, and wide receiver.
As they approach the draft, Campbell acknowledges that every team has areas for improvement and sees this year as an opportunity to continue building on the progress they have made. With a more balanced roster, the Lions are looking forward to selecting the best talent available while addressing key positions to further solidify their team for the upcoming season.
