After a disappointing 2023 season for the New York Giants defense, ranking 26th in points allowed, new defensive coordinator Shane Bowen is determined to bring about a positive change.
Speaking recently about rebuilding the defense, Bowen stressed the importance of hard-hitting gameplay as the trademark he wants his defense to embody under his leadership.
“I’m hoping it’s going to be speed and aggressiveness,” Bowen expressed in an interview with former Giants center Shaun O’Hara. “Regardless of scheme, I want to make sure our guys are lined up, they know what to do, and they can play fast and aggressive. I want to maximize their abilities and see some violence and guys making plays.”
Coming from the Tennessee Titans, where Bowen spent six seasons and the last three as defensive coordinator, the new Giants coach aims to replicate his success with the Giants. Tennessee’s defense ranked first in the league in red zone scoring last season and allowed the fewest rushing yards per game over his tenure.
Bowen identified the need to improve the Giants’ run defense, as they struggled in 2023, allowing opponents to rush for over 140 yards in seven games. The team ended the season ranking 29th in rush yards allowed and 31st in touchdowns surrendered.
Looking ahead, Bowen envisions a physical and aggressive defense for the Giants, emphasizing the need to affect the quarterback and stop the run effectively. Acquiring pass rusher Brian Burns from Carolina as a key defensive addition, Bowen sees Burns pairing well with Kayvon Thibodeaux and Dexter Lawrence on the front line.
