The Seattle Seahawks pulled off a bold move during the NFL Draft by acquiring linebacker Derick Hall from the Denver Broncos as part of the trade for Russell Wilson. Hall, a talented Auburn product, was taken with the 37th overall pick, which originally belonged to the Broncos.
At 6-foot-3 and 254 pounds, Hall is considered a “wide-nine” rusher with above-average measurables and excellent production, durability, and intangibles. Pro Football Focus ranks him as the 87th-best prospect in the draft, and his college stats show why. In four years at Auburn, Hall recorded 146 tackles, 19 sacks, and five forced fumbles. He also had two interceptions in 2022, his first career picks.
Seattle’s defense struggled in 2022, giving up the third-most rushing yards and eighth-most points per game. But Hall’s arrival should help shore up the defense immediately. His ability to rush the passer and disrupt opposing offenses will be invaluable.
Meanwhile, the trade for Wilson looks even better for Seattle in light of Geno Smith’s stellar play last season and Wilson’s struggles. The Seahawks received three players and five picks from the Broncos, and they used those picks to acquire Hall and Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon, among others.
If Hall and Witherspoon can play to their potential, the Wilson trade could go down as one of the best in Seattle history. The Seahawks have always prided themselves on a strong defense, and Hall has the potential to be a key piece of that defense for years to come.
