In a surprising move, former No. 2 overall pick Carson Wentz has signed a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. The news was reported by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport on Monday night.

Wentz, who was selected in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles, is now set to join his fifth team in as many seasons. After a turbulent 2020 season with the Eagles and unsuccessful stints with the Indianapolis Colts and Washington Commanders in 2021 and 2022, Wentz found himself playing a backup role with the Los Angeles Rams in the late stages of the 2023 season.

During his time with the Rams, Wentz had a standout performance in a Week 18 win over the San Francisco 49ers, where he recorded three total touchdowns. Now, the 31-year-old quarterback will be joining the Chiefs and adding depth to their quarterback room led by Patrick Mahomes.

While Wentz may not be seen as a starter at this point in his career, his experience and knowledge of the game will be valuable for the Chiefs if called upon. Under the guidance of head coach Andy Reid, Wentz will have the opportunity to further develop his skills and contribute to the team’s success.

Throughout his NFL career, Wentz has played in 95 games, achieving a 47-45-1 record as a starter. He has thrown for 22,292 yards, 153 touchdowns, and 67 interceptions. Additionally, at 6-foot-5 and 237 pounds, Wentz is known for his underrated running ability and could potentially provide a boost in short-yardage situations for the Chiefs.

With this signing, the Chiefs have secured their veteran backup quarterback, and Wentz has found a new home in Kansas City.
