Former Detroit Lions cornerback Cam Sutton, who had been on the run for weeks, finally turned himself in to face domestic battery charges in Hillsborough County, Florida on Sunday. The charges against Sutton include a felony charge of domestic battery through strangulation.
According to the Hillsborough County sheriff’s office, Sutton surrendered himself at the Orient Road Jail at 8:24 p.m. on Sunday, nearly a week after his attorney had indicated that he would do so. Sheriff Chad Chronister praised Sutton for making the right decision to cooperate with law enforcement after evading capture for weeks.
The warrant for Sutton’s arrest was issued on March 7th after officers responded to a domestic violence incident involving Sutton and an unnamed female. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, Sutton had already fled. The Sheriff’s office had issued a social media post on March 20 asking for the public’s help in locating Sutton.
Detroit Lions president Rod Wood learned about the arrest warrant and urged Sutton to turn himself in and face the consequences.
Wood expressed surprise at the news of the warrant, stating that he found out about it during a Zoom call with the league. After speaking with Sutton and advising him to seek legal counsel and surrender, the Lions decided to release him from the team.
