George Odum has always loved football since he was little. He attended Millington Central High School and played both football and tack.
During his time in High School, George Odum nearly gave up on football when he was faced with a tragedy. During a routine practice, a sophomore wide receiver Dana Payne. Payne ran into Odum’s shoulder in a normal football collision.
Payne had gotten up but then fell to the ground and stopped breathing before catching his breath again after receiving CPR. He was rushed to the hospital but passed away in the ambulance before he arrived.
George Odum was troubled by the effects of Payne’s death and decided not to play football again. According to reports gathered, Payne was said to have died from bronchial asthma that was triggered in part by the contact to his chest he sustained during his collision with Odum.
Even with the autopsy reports, George Odum still was scared of returning to the field, despite the talks from his family and teammates. Payne’s mother had to step in and console George Odum stating that it wasn’t his fault. Payne’s mother’s forgiveness and blessings had gotten him back to the field.
So to keep Dana Payne’s memory, George Odum wrote Payne’s initials on his wrist tape wherever he goes and even in practice.
With George Odum’s comeback to the football world, he got the chance to further his education and football career at Central Arkansas. He played for five seasons and redshirted in his freshman year.
During his college days, George Odum played both linebacker and safety and did extremely well in these areas. He was named first-team All-Southland Conference after making 86 tackles (58 solo), 7.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, four passes defensed, one interception (returned for a touchdown), four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two blocked kick.
George Odum was also named Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year and a consensus All-America selection after recording 120 tackles (78 solo), 8.0 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks, two passes defended, and one forced fumble.
George Odum finished his college career as the fourth in school history with 350 career tackles.
