Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh is in full support of the recent ban on the hip-drop tackle technique in the NFL, following a serious injury suffered by tight end Mark Andrews last season.
Harbaugh emphasized the dangers of the tackle, stating that it is 25 times more likely to result in a serious injury compared to other tackling techniques. He firmly believes that players can effectively tackle without resorting to the hip-drop technique, which has been banned due to its high injury rate.
The NFL has implemented a 15-yard penalty for players using the illegal hip-drop tackle, with the expectation of more fines than flags being issued for violations.
The league reported that the hip-drop tackle was used 230 times last season, resulting in 15 players missing playing time due to injuries. Despite objections from the NFLPA and some players, the league decided to outlaw the play to protect player safety.
Harbaugh remains confident that defensive players will adapt and continue to excel without the hip-drop tackle.
He highlighted the origins of the technique in rugby and emphasized that traditional tackling methods have been effective for over a century.
While there may be some pushback from players, Harbaugh is optimistic that the ban on the hip-drop tackle will ultimately benefit the game and prevent unnecessary injuries.
