American football tight end T.J. Hockenson plays for the NFL’s Detroit Lions. At Iowa, he played collegiate football.
Hockenson received the John Mackey Award as the top tight end in college football as a redshirt sophomore in 2018.
The football star grew up in Cherokee, Iowa, moving back to Chariton, Iowa in his teenage years where he attended Chariton High School and played football and basketball.
He was a four-year letter winner as a tight end and defensive back and set school records for receiving yards in a game, season, and career. He led his team to the state playoffs as a senior and was named all-state first team that year.

Brown posted on her Instagram Stories a message regarding his move to the Vikings. “Excited for this next chapter,” Brown posted on her story, where she also re-shared Hockenson’s farewell message to Lions fans.
In a post on his Instagram the day before, Hockenson stated, “Detroit, I can’t tell you how appreciative I am to this city and fan base for accepting me and my family from the start. All the teammates and coaches that I’ve been with here have helped me every step of the way.
Hockenson redshirted his true freshman year in 2016. He was one of two tight ends in the starting lineup in Iowa’s 2017 opener against Wyoming, along with Noah Fant. He recorded his first career receptions the next week against Iowa State, finishing with two catches for 41 yards in the game.
