The NFL has had its problems when it comes to handling minorities and one person who has never shied away from telling his story is Mike McDaniel.

The Miami Dolphins head coach is bi-racial, having been born to a white mother and a black father. Despite his difficult childhood, McDaniel has grown to be a family man.

“It’s weird that it comes up because I’ve just tried to be a good person, and I think my background opens my eyes a little bit,” McDaniel told ESPN in an interview about his family.

“I don’t have any real experience with racism. But I know my mom experienced it when she married my dad. I know my dad experienced it and that it’s in my family. I guess that makes me a human being that can identify with other people’s problems.”

He is currently happily married and also has a daughter.
