The NFL has announced a new update to its uniform policy that will allow teams to add a third helmet option to their uniform closets. This decision comes two years after alternate helmet designs were approved to return to the league.
In 2021, the NFL adjusted its uniform policy to allow alternate helmets for the 2022 season, moving away from the previous “one-shell” rule that had been in place for a decade. Following a continued focus on player health and safety, the league has now expanded the policy to allow teams to pursue another helmet design.
Teams preparing for a redesign in the 2024 season have been given the option of adding a third helmet, which will be available to all teams for the 2025 season. If a team wishes to utilize an alternate color helmet for the 2025 season, they must inform the league office by May 1, 2024.
These additional helmets, known as “alternate color helmets,” can only be worn with the club’s authorized optional uniforms. If paired with a classic uniform, the helmet colors and designs must be historically compatible.
To ensure player health and safety, certain requirements must be met when using alternate color helmets. Clubs must obtain a new set of helmets for all players, with the same make, model, and size as their primary helmet. The helmets must be available to all players at the start of training camp and worn during practice leading up to the game in which they will be used.
Thirteen teams wore alternate helmets in 2022, and more teams added alternate looks in the 2023 season. These changes aim to maintain player safety by ensuring proper helmet fit and giving players adequate time to practice with the new helmets before game action.
