Possible trade talks involving future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers and the New York Jets have recently re-engaged after a “dormant” couple of weeks, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. While a deal doesn’t appear to be imminent, the two sides hope to conclude something within the next week.
The Packers and Rodgers have been on a path to split for a year, with Rodgers making it clear that he only wanted to play for the Jets this season. However, both teams have been unable to agree on compensation, and the Packers want to make sure they receive fair compensation for their superstar quarterback.
The Jets believe they have leverage because Green Bay wants to be rid of the drama and Rodgers’ contract, while the Packers want to get something valuable in return for the quarterback’s services. With Rodgers openly stating his desire to play for the Jets, Green Bay’s options are significantly limited.
The Jets’ entire offseason plan has been centered around acquiring Rodgers to fill their long-standing need at quarterback, and with no viable internal options, it’s Rodgers or nothing for New York.
While a deal has yet to be reached, the two sides may finally be reaching a point of agreement. For the Jets, acquiring Rodgers is imperative to their success, and it remains to be seen if Green Bay will get the compensation they desire.
