New York Jets’ newly signed wide receiver, Mike Williams, is optimistic about being ready to play in Week 1.
However, Jets head coach Robert Saleh has advised against jumping to conclusions about Williams’ return to the field.
Saleh acknowledged that Williams still has a long road ahead in his ACL recovery, similar to Jets running back Breece Hall’s timeline. Despite Hall’s injury in October 2022, he surprised everyone with a standout performance in Week 1 of the following season.
It is important to note that the recovery process for a young running back like Hall could differ from that of a 29-year-old wide receiver with past injuries, like Williams. Williams sustained his season-ending injury on September 24, 2023, giving him more time to heal compared to Hall.
While Williams believes he will be prepared for Week 1, the Jets management is cautious about setting high expectations for him right away. General manager Joe Douglas stated that Williams might not be ready for the start of training camp.
The ultimate goal remains for Williams to be ready for the season opener in Week 1. Any additional practice time before that will be beneficial, especially in establishing chemistry with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Saleh expressed his confidence in Williams, emphasizing that if he puts in the necessary work, he has the potential to be a valuable asset to both himself and the Jets organization.
