Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie has hinted at his jersey number change and the story behind the number.
McDuffie, who currently wears jersey number 21, gave a hint in his latest Instagram post that he would be donning the number 22 — a number that has a strong meaning and connection with his late brother Tyler.
He posted a photoshopped photo of himself wearing the number 22, and gave it the caption: “Return of the Mac.”
In August 2021, Trent McDuffie disclosed the story behind number 22 to Pac-12 Network, saying the number is one of his favorite stories about his alma mater the University of Washington because he shared the number with his older brother who is late.
McDuffie told Pac-12 Network: “I think it’s probably one of my favorite stories about UW. Coming in, I never wore 22, it was my older brother’s number, and unfortunately, six years ago he passed away. And [the] first thing coming into UW on my locker was 22.”
“I just texted my family and said, ‘Wow, look at this is. This is fate. I was meant to be here.’ It was kind of like, that started this journey in college football and I wear it on my heart, I wear it on my arm and kind of the story of Tyler and his story, and just keeping his name alive so everybody in the country can learn and hear about him and understand that I’m doing it for him. … A brother’s bond is special and I kind of bring that to the UW team,” he concluded.
