Kirk Cousins, the starting quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, is entering the final year of his contract with the team. At 34 years old, Cousins realizes that his time to prove himself is running out, and he is ready to do whatever it takes to stay in Minnesota.
During a recent news conference, Cousins stated that he wants to stay with the Vikings and is excited about the opportunity to prove his worth. He acknowledges that he has good football left in him and is determined to go out and earn his spot on the team.
While Cousins is a solid starting QB, he has struggled in big moments, with a 1-2 postseason record in five seasons with the Vikings. His 2-10 record on “Monday Night Football” is also cause for concern, as it highlights his inability to perform in clutch situations.
Despite having premier playmakers such as Pro Bowl WR Justin Jefferson and Pro Bowl RB Dalvin Cook on his team, Cousins can’t use a lack of offensive talent as an excuse for his shortcomings.
According to Spotrac, Cousins’ market value is a two-year deal worth $43.2 million annually, a price that the Vikings may find too steep for an aging quarterback with no Super Bowl or conference championship appearances. With Minnesota currently last in cap space, a Cousins extension seems unlikely.
The Vikings may also be considering a future without Cousins, as evidenced by their drafting of BYU QB Jaren Hall in the fifth round.
For Cousins to secure his spot as the Vikings QB, he must lead the team to another NFC North title and a deep playoff run. The pressure is on for Cousins to prove his worth and secure his future with the Minnesota Vikings.
